Tuning In: Tackling homelessness through digital music education

ree

Although the rate of inflation has slowed since its peak in 2023, the cost of living crisis continues and housing prices are still rising. This contributed to 2024's meteoric 14% rise in English homelessness: by the start of 2025, 354,000 people in England were unhoused, nearly half of whom were children. That's 1 in 160 people.

Earlier this year, SoundLincs considered how our unique strengths can combat a small part of this growing issue. We created Tuning In, a brand new large-scale project, using music production to improve the digital skills of participants experiencing homelessness.

A hybrid approach

By combining digital inclusion with creative engagement, participants receive the health benefits of creativity alongside material support. They have access to technology and training, helping them overcome barriers to essential services, employment and communication.

Music making sessions build community and confidence that lasts. Tuning In represents a long-lasting investment into Lincoln, and we hope to continue making a difference by reducing economic and social inequality. This project is currently funded by the City of Lincoln Council's UKSPF Community Grant Scheme.

What does Tuning In offer?

SoundLincs will deliver free group music-making sessions at a number of venues across Lincoln, including homeless shelters and organisations. Participants will use music production software and recording hardware to work on songs collaboratively.
