The Sing Up Lindsey Celebration’ saw 600 children from 14 different schools gather at the Lincolnshire Showground in June 2009, for the culmination of 18 months of singing amongst young people in the districts of East and West Lindsey.
The event ran in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council’s Music Support Service, the Sing Up National Singing Programme and the District Councils of East and West Lindsey. The East Lindsey participants came from primary schools in Partney, Saltfleetby, Theddlethorpe and Great Steeping, together with Tennyson High School, Linkage College and Mablethorpe Youth Centre. They joined the West Lindsey group, which included primary schools in Faldingworth, Middle Rasen, Normanby-by-Spital, Kelsey and Nettleton, plus Caistor Yarborough Comprehensive and the choir of Market Rasen Junior School.
The celebration opened with a morning of enjoyable workshop sessions and the schools using three special recording studios which soundLINCS had made available at the Showground for the day, enabling every group to record a version of their own song. There was also a series of performances by groups from the two districts, sharing the techniques and pieces that they had learnt during their 18 months of involvement with Sing Up.
The event concluded with a song which brought all the children together in a spectacular five-part harmony with a performance of ‘Waiting for This Moment’, an anthem that had been composed specifically for Lincolnshire by musician Midge Ure. Leanne Taylor, an external evaluator, commented that: “This project has given excellent opportunities to build links with the local community and has provided and opportunity to show the local young people in a very positive light”.
