ClassicCombo was a large multi-genre concert in February 2005 that was held in the stunning surroundings of Lincoln Cathedral. It ran as part of the sound52 project and attracted nearly 300 young performers from across Lincolnshire to the stage to display the skills they had developed in rehearsals and workshops with the soundLINCS Music Facilitators. The event was a celebration of two years of sound52 running community music projects for children, teenagers and their families across the county.
The evening consisted of a diverse mix of pieces; starting with a performance of Junk Groove by three youth groups from the county. The performance featured material that had been created during sound52 workshops in conjunction with Lincolnshire Dance and provided a great spectacle for the audience of over 600 people.
This was followed by a moving audio/visual presentation inspired by the story of Anne Frank, using original material that had been created by the young participants during group composition, digital production and recording sessions.
The second half of the evening was devoted to the premiere of ‘Space’, a unique cross-genre composition written specially for the event and composed by 3 sound52 Music Facilitators: John Stafford, Mike Nicholls and Danny McCaughern. ‘Space’ brought together 56 HeatUp! rock musicians, 46 young woodwind and brass players, a string ensemble and vocalists for a fantastic performance that was brilliantly received by the audience.
One audience member after the event said: “It has been absolutely fantastic – an incredible evening. The quality of music from such simple components has been astounding. A most uplifting experience from the orchestra and what a great musical start for the children!”
