The Hitting the Spot toolkit is built from a two-year consultation and co-design process with over 40 Hub leads and 50 other music and arts organisations, produced by World Pencil, soundLINCS, Brighter Sound and musinc, with support from Youth Music.

The toolkit is made-up of 9 steps that can be easily implemented, illustrated with a wealth of case studies and resourcing examples, as well as ingredients for music leading and teaching. It is made up of research from institutions such as Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Nottingham.

Nick Gibbs MP, Minister of State for School Standards, set out a long-term aspiration for Hubs to support social mobility. He says: “Social mobility is a key priority for the government… We will be looking to Arts Council England to support and challenge hubs to carry out their roles in relation to all pupils.”

The toolkit delineates core social impact values in a simple and actionable way, marrying them with music making. These include social impact outcomes, such as community cohesion, place-making, and personal and community development.

Nick Owen MBE, CEO, The Mighty Creatives (Arts Council Bridge Organisation for East Midlands) describes the power of music: “Forward-looking Music Hubs aren’t merely interested in social impact: they tune the power of music into transformative social possibilities for young people, and are central to catalysing the social change that music can effect.”

The resource helps to understand, celebrate and develop the social impact of their musical work, and to go beyond a purely musical agenda.
