First Notes Resource Pack: Take Two!
That’s right, we’re doing it again! Our First Notes Resource Pack is currently undergoing an image change, to bring it up to date and also to incorporate all the brilliant suggestions we’ve had from those of you who have used the original Resource Pack.
The new resource pack will not only be brighter, bolder and easier to use, it is also designed to work with and around the Early Years Foundation Stage Four Main Principles and Areas of Learning and Development.
These new resource packs will be available from September. Until then, watch this space for updates and more information.
10 Years on – soundLINCS Celebrates
Musical ‘Revolution’ rolls into second decade
Hundreds turned out on a chilly summer Sunday to herald a special milestone in Lincolnshire’s cultural heritage. The county’s Music Development Agency soundlincs celebrated its 10th anniversary in June in a truly appropriate manner, bringing together musicians of all abilities, ages and genres to perform ‘Revolution’, a mass performance event in the grounds of Lincoln Castle, the backdrop to so many other historic events in the city’s past.
Everyone from pre-school children and picnicking families to seasoned music professionals and officials bearing chains of office were greeted with equal warmth by soundlincs CEO Nikki-Kate Heyes and Chairman David Lambert. However, the real stars of the event were the participants.
After a morning of open workshops, the event began with 100+ players arranged in groups around the castle grounds, all contributing to an improvised musical ‘Revolution’. In a juxtaposition of cultures, genres and musical traditions, African drummers, Samba and ‘junk’ instrumentalists played alongside woodwind, brass, and string ensembles, vocalists, guitarists, bassists, percussionists and even an Early Years group: all drew upon a series of riffs composed by community musicians from the soundlincs team, interpreting them as befitted their instruments, ability and the whim of the section leaders.
The effect was a mesmerising and powerful demonstration of community music-making at its most inclusive. But more was to come: the rock classic Bohemian Rhapsody and Stevie Wonder’s Happy Birthday To Ya had been specially arranged for the event, again by the soundlincs team. The open-air debut performance was the culmination of several intensive rehearsals, and drew to a finale with flags, fireworks and water fountains just as the rain started in earnest.
In addition to their own copy of the ‘Revolution’ riffs which had echoed round the castle grounds, everyone was given a certificate to show they had taken part, plus a soundlincs umbrella - which, happily, most participants hadn’t needed for much of the day. Iced buns were also passed round the entire assembly of players and audience at the end of the performance.
‘Our Revolution was a unique musical event to celebrate a unique moment in Lincolnshire life,’ reflects soundlincs CEO Nikki-Kate Heyes. ‘But it was also great fun for all who took part! 10 years of music-making across Lincolnshire has shown time and time again that community music must be accessible to everybody – regardless of age, ability, cultural background or geographic location – and it was this inclusive spirit which made our event a Revolution to remember.’

Sing Up Lincs
Sing Up Lincs is the jubilant harmony of 2,000 young voices! This all-singing programme is being delivered by soundLINCS into the county districts of East Lindsey and West Lindsey and aims to build up an authentic culture of singing within 4 community clusters. Each cluster contains, at their heart, three small rural Primary schools and the Secondary that they feed into.
Each cluster will embrace community groups and settings that connect pupils and their families to the schools. Maybe a Youth Centre…a football team…the village fete….a scout or guiding group. Each cluster will have their very own singing leader who will work with them for 2 days a week in the traditional model of ‘musician in residence’ for the entire duration of the project.
Sing Up Lincs will predominantly be delivered through creative music workshops, both in and out of school times, and will also feature opportunities for recording, performance and at least one huge singing extravaganza! It will also link in with other music and community festivals throughout the Lindsey districts.
The schools have been strategically selected by District Council partners and fall within areas of concern due to economic or social factors.
Lincolnshire Music Service is an active partner for Sing Up Lincs and will work with soundLINCS to achieve 2 shared areas of interest: engaging boys with singing and work with the transitions age group.
The Research and Development phase of Sing Up Lincs is complete and reveals a variety of singing knowledge, experience and interests throughout East and West Lindsey. Jubilant harmony starts in January 2008!

Miscellaneous
321 Schools Singing and Songwriting Project Phase 2
The first two phases of 321 are now completed, with great success! Between January and July, we have worked with 24 primary schools (a total of over 700 young people!) to create 24 original school songs, plus eight separate versions of the 321 Project Theme Tune ‘Superheroes’ (written by Dan McCaughern). This project was conducted in partnership with the Lincolnshire County Music Service, so our thanks go to them, to the young people and teachers who participated so enthusiastically, and to everyone who worked so hard on making it an event to remember. For photos of the two performances please go to the gallery.
We are currently planning the next phase of our collaborative project with Lincolnshire County Music Service, so watch this space for our next exciting project.
321 is comprised of:
5 practical workshop sessions (lasting up to 2 hours) and a performance.
Sessions 1-4 will take place within your school and involve creative work with a group of Key Stage 2 children (max 30 ideally a class) and their teacher/s. These will happen every other week. It is hoped that the children and teacher will work on the song in between sessions.
The aims of the workshops are to help the children and teachers to create a school song. You will receive a CD of your song to keep.
Each song will have the same chorus and each school will be provided with an audio CD, lyrics, guitar tabs and music for it.
Session 5 will be a joint rehearsal with 2 other schools from your area. We’re calling this grouping of 3 schools a ‘cluster’. The session will find creative ways to ‘merge’ elements of the 3 individual songs into 1 and come up with a unique cluster piece. Hence….321!
Session 6 The performance! – all 12 schools will meet up and perform two singing extravaganzas. Each cluster will perform their own unique piece and all schools will sing and play the original chorus.
The Performance will be on:
15th July : (Venue tbc) 6 Schools from the Lincoln and Market Rasen area.
17th July : (Venue tbc) 6 Schools from the Boston and Spilsby area.

The February and April Workshops at Libraries in Lincoln, Stamford, Mablethorpe, Bourne, Welton were a great success! Keep checking here for the next phase of workshops at a library near you
soundOUT......Have your say
soundLINCS is delighted to announce the formation of
soundOUT. This is a new initiative developed in consultation with young people to enable
soundLINCS to listen to the views of young people about music projects across Lincolnshire. This is a real opportunity for young people to ‘have their say’ about the value and relevance of music in their lives.
Through regular
soundOUT meetings
soundLINCS will be working with young people who have been involved with the company. This will help us to develop creative, fun and exciting music projects for young people to enjoy.
If you are interested in becoming involved in
soundOUT or would like more information, please download the
soundOUT flyer.

Following the first hugely successful phase of the Music Sounds Project (in association with the National Child Minders Association), we are very excited to announce Music Sounds Inclusive!
We are offering an exciting ‘training and workshop’ package for Childminders based in Lincolnshire. There are eight opportunities at eight venues. This package will comprise of:
2 daytime Music Workshops for Childminders with their Children (under 5) & 1 evening session for just Childminders which are all FREE! In the evening session our Early Years Music Facilitators will work together to develop and expand on the work that will be covered in the Children’s session, helping to make music inclusive.
All workshops will be run by experienced Early Years Music Facilitators and they will provide ample materials to help you form your house-hold band!
All children taking part will receive a certificate to take home with them — as will all Childminders!
Please bring one random household item with you to the evening session (the more obscure the better!) to challenge your Music Facilitators and fellow Childminders to make music from the products brought to the group! When choosing your item please keep in mind suitability for the age-group. This part of the session will be called Musicreation! — Bring your imagination and creative flair with you!
