soundLINCS is a Not-For-Profit organisation, Company Limited by Guarantee,
Registered Charity: No.1086483

A brief history
In 1995 Lincolnshire County Council in partnership with the Eastern Arts Board created a
new post of Music Development Worker for Lincolnshire. It was a 3 year project called A Wider
Air and managed wholly by the Firebird Trust.
Due to the success of the project and
following the publication of a consultation report, moves to make A Wider Air into an independent
Not-For-Profit organisation began. On the 1st June 1998 the current Director Nikki-Kate Heyes
was appointed and the project was transformed into a Company Limited by Guarantee and renamed
soundLINCS. The company joined the flourishing Arts Agency infrastructure of Lincolnshire.
Initially working out of an office at home with a single worker/practitioner, the company succeeded in securing office accommodation in Lincoln during the millennium year of 2000. soundLINCS now supports a staff team of 11 core office staff, as well as over 70 Music Facilitators. It also supports part time posts with specific project responsibilities. A detailed list of all workers can be found in the section soundLINCS Staff.

Voltage
VInvolved Project
Structured Volunteering Opportunities for Young People
soundLINCS has been selected as the regional partner for Youth Music to deliver Voltage. Voltage is a 3 year project (2008-2011) involving young people aged 16 – 25 and will:
- Deliver structured volunteering opportunities in music
- Actively involve young people in the shaping of their opportunities
- Encourage inclusiveness and diversity
- Demonstrate a positive effect on the community
Youth Music has been awarded £300,000 from the charity ‘V’ to deliver Voltage throughout the country. soundLINCS are delighted to have been selected as one of only 5 delivery partners working with Youth Music to deliver Voltage. Music is always high on the list of young people’s passions and we believe that offering them the chance to volunteer in a music setting will be attractive and beneficial to all involved.
Voltage will focus on creating opportunities for Children in Public Care and will work with a strong network on Lincolnshire based organisations to achieve this:
- Children’s Services (Children and Young People’s Participation)
- Barnado’s (Lincolnshire Leaving Care Service)
- CfBT (Virtual School for Children in Public Care)
- Lincolnshire Youth Service
- CG Partnerships
Each year Voltage will provide:
Taster Opportunities – These are short term activities which aim to engage young people in the idea of volunteering such as helping to fundraise for a music event which will be for the community or helping out at an event. Each young person taking part in a Taster Opportunity will have a 1:1 session at the end which will include some signposting. They will each receive a Thank You certificate from V. There will be 10 Taster Opportunities each year.
Young Ambassadors for Music – These are part time volunteers aged between 16 and 25 who will take part in a range of volunteering activities, linked to an existing music project, for a period of between 6 months and 1 year. They will take part in national training and celebration events as well as receive local training and support. They will be able to work towards gaining a Youth Achievement Award as well as the V awards based on the number of hours they volunteer. Young Ambassadors are spokespeople for music and will aim to encourage greater participation in music-making and will receive support and guidance from an Associate Young Ambassador as well as from soundLINCS. There will be 4 Young Ambassador Opportunities per year.
Associate Young Ambassadors – They will also be part time volunteers also aged between 16 and 25 who will act as peer mentors to the Young Ambassadors for a period of 6 months to a year. They will also be able to access national and local training and will be able to work towards Youth Achievement Awards. The volunteers will also be able to gain a V award for their contributions. The Associate Young Ambassadors will be supported by soundLINCS. There will be 2 Associate Young Ambassador Opportunities per year.
The overall aim of Voltage is:
To provide high quality, structured volunteering opportunities on a short term and part time basis to enable young people to become involved in shaping music provision in their local area, and have a positive impact on their communities.
The project objectives of Voltage are:
- Increased number of ‘hard to reach’ young people involved in structured volunteering opportunities linked to music
- Improved/more visible pathways for young people into education, employment or training
- Greater community participation in music-making activity
- Young people more involved in contributing to the development of music education across the formal and non-formal sectors, locally, regionally and nationally
- Increased opportunities for young people to be actively involved in supporting government agendas linked to young people and the arts
- Increased awareness of the benefits of volunteering, particularly among arts organisations and the community
