Welcome to Past Projects.
This page currently describes projects that have been completed since the website was originally published in June 2003. When a project is complete, the information is simply transferred to Past Projects without alteration to dates or use of the present tense. soundLINCS was established in June 1998, which means that there are 5 years of completed projects waiting in our dusty files to transfer onto this page. We're working on it!

Revolution arts African Drumming Session - Percussion
The 28th of March 2004 saw a slice of African culture injected into the Sam Newsum Arts centre in Boston, with an hour-long African drumming workshop. Upon gaining more confidence, the participants were able to compose their own rhythm, which was performed alongside the original at the end of the session.

Groove Into Summer - General music
June 30th, July 7th and July the 14th saw Carlton Road Kids After School Club host six musical workshops for Children from the ages of 4-11. The varied 45minute workshops allowed the participants to experience general music themes, some based upon the idea of 'school'.
Gifted and Talented - CPM
On the 7th of July, the most gifted and talented pupils from a cluster of secondary schools were allowed the opportunity to participate in dance, drama, music, visual art and photography workshops. The music workshops involved guitars, bass, drum kits, and vocals. Alongside this, some participants brought their own, more classical orientated instruments, such as cornets, flutes and saxophones.
After the bassists had come up with a basic riff that could be easily transposed to other instruments, the participants were split up into four sections depending upon the instrument they were playing. Once a basic melody had been established for each of the four sections, the vocalists were able to create lyrics in accordance to the mood of the chords and the emotions it provoked.
The final composition was performed at the end of the day, after other themes within music had been explored, such as the way music in horror film scores could be used to create tension and mood.
Sure Start North East - General Music
A total of twelve workshops are to be held between the 15th March and 26th April at various Sure Start centres. The sessions are aimed at giving a musical experience to both the child and the parent and encouraging music-making in the home. One Jam – (EL, SK, LC)
One Jam is a project run in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council Childrens Services and One Projects. One Jam participants are aged between 13 and 17 and are in the care of the Lincolnshire County Council. The music genres on offer are Gamelan, DJing, Music Production and Vocals sung in a Gospel style. The aim of the project is to create original songs and music to perform/share on the final day. The workshops are video recorded and a short video programme produced. The workshops are supported with an integrated team of Social Workers, Music Facilitators and other staff.
The first ‘taster’ day is on 24th October at Butlin’s, Skegness. During this day the participants (24 in total) have the opportunity to participate in all the music genres. Following Butlins the group will split into 2 groups of 12. One group will work in Grantham at the Youth Centre, New Beacon Road. The second group is based in Lincoln and will work at St Giles Multi Use Centre for one day and the New Life Church for two days. The session dates are 26th October, 11th November and 18th November.
The final day of One Jam is 19th November and the two groups will meet together at Grantham Youth Centre to share their compositions, dances and thoughts about the project. It is also planned to screen the specially created video programme and the whole group will sing together and perform a Gamelan piece.
Sounds Good - CPM
On the 28th of March 2004, Louth's Monks Dyke Technology College opened its doors to budding musicians throughout Lincolnshire providing a thorough and grounded look at what its really like to be in the music business. Activities during the day included Battle of the Bands, Jukebox Jury for demo CD's, workshop jams, Industry seminars and recording studio tours.
Experts within their respective fields led the seminars, with the practical, 'hands-on' side provided by soundLINCS. The project was aimed at giving musicians in the North of Lincolnshire a chance to meet other bands, be involved in workshops and get advice on the music industry from artists and arts advisors.
Come and Play Playfest - Early Years
On the 26th of June, Horncastle became the venue for thirty children taking part in the Come and Play Playfest. The workshops focused mainly on different types of percussion, allowing the children to explore the instruments at their own pace.
East Lindsey Diversity Festival - Battle of the Bands
Held in conjunction with the East Lindsey Diversity Festival, the annual soundLINCS Battle of the Bands competition will take place on 30th July 2005. Bands will be offered a twenty minute set in which to impress the judges, with a prize of recording time in a studio up for grabs. If you wish to enter your band into this event, please contact soundLINCS on 01522 510073.
Please note, priority will be given to those bands from the East Lindsey and Boston areas, and places are allocated on a strictly first-come-first-served basis.
Street Beat (Lincs) - Junk
August will see the execution of four workshops introducing street dance and junk music, taking place around Lincolnshire.
On the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of August, Horncastle Curriculum Centre will play host to a three day "Fun in the Sun" residential for 13-18 year olds. The residential will include activities such as karaoke, mask-making, mini-Olympics and a live band.
The second day is dedicated to street culture with an introduction using videos, music and pictures. Participants will then be able to take part in a workshop incorporating either street dance, junk music and creating original rap.
The street culture theme is continued into three more one day workshops throughout August at :
Grantham Community Centre, (17th August, 10:00-4:00)

Kids Club Holiday Club - General music
The 9th of August marked the beginning of a fun packed week for members of the Woodhall Wizards Childrens Centre in Woodhall Spa, occurring as part of the 'Kids Club Holiday Club'. The sessions involved basic rhythm exercises, before moving on to percussion and junk instruments. Also elements of song-writing and story telling were added, allowing the children to use the instruments in creating appropriate sound effects.
Towards the end of the week, the children were able to come up with basic melodies and lyrics, creating four songs that were performed at the end of the session. After the week was over the children had not only gained a basic understanding of rhythm and such related areas, but had also increased in confidence and their ability to perform in front of, and with other people.
Lincolnshire Youth Choir Residential Weekend - Vocal
Although some of the thirty-six young people involved in this residential weekend had some experience of singing in groups in their schools, for all it was a first opportunity to sing as part of a large mixed voice choir.
The aim of this weekend was to provide young children with this experience as well as broaden their musical horizons. This was reflected in the choice of repertoire, including a range of classical and world music traditions. Similarly the introduction of a Ceilidh on Saturday night gave the residents the opportunity to learn various dances.
The pupils presented the results of their work to parents/carers and friends at an open rehearsal on Sunday afternoon, which drew positive reactions from everyone, in particular, Horncastle College who asked the choir to return in May and sing at the Horncastle Gala.

One Jam participants are aged between 13 and 17 and are in the care of the Lincolnshire County Council. The music genres on offer are Gamelan, DJing, Music Production and Vocals sung in a Gospel style. The aim of the project is to create original songs and music to perform/share on the final day. CPM Development - In Transit
A regional Gig Swap project called In Transit was developed by The Network in 2002. Subsequent to an initial taster in November of that year, substantial funding was drawn down in 2003 through the then East Midlands Arts (ACE-EM). The taster for the project started as part of a national initiative in November 2002 in conjunction with The Underground Music Network (UMN). The Network assisted UMN with development for the project through funding to support the UMN advertising campaign. The UMN project has now moved on to it's second year and again is in receipt of support from EmmNet, both through advocacy and finance.
In Transit is a series of industry seminars and live gigs across the region allowing local bands in each area the opportunity to break away from the restrictions of playing locally. In Transit will subsidise, fees, production equipment and publicity enabling artistes and promoters the opportunity to promote acts that would not normally be able to appear at local events.
The performance days will start with an afternoon seminar with representatives from across the business giving advice and information about all aspects of the business. The final hour of the seminars will be given over to a 'Demo-Panel' where local acts will bring their recordings along to the panel for guidance and criticism.
Dates:
Leicester 3rd May
Mansfield 11th May
Northampton 18th May
Lincoln 24th May
Derby 1st June
Nottingham 3rd June (gig only!)
CPM Development - Hitting Out! - 2003
Hitting Out! is a series of open-air contemporary music concerts conceived to be performed in Lincoln's City Square. The project developed from a successful pilot concert, which took place as part of the Jubilee day celebrations held in June 2002.
The basic concept behind the project is to develop the thriving Lincoln contemporary popular (CPM) music scene. The aim is not only to provide free quality entertainment for passers by and fans, but also to allow local and regional artistes an open platform to broaden their 'fan-base'. From the positive level of feedback from last year's concert and subject to suitable funding, we are confident that an open and musically unbiased programme will enhance the summer months. Working with EmmNet, Lincoln will be able to allow local acts the opportunity to perform out of the city to a wider audience.
In addition to these benefits for Lincoln artistes & audiences we will also be able to enjoy quality acts from across the region performing for free in the city centre.

Connecteenmusic - CPM
A taster workshop held on the 15th June at TeenSeen, Gainsborough allowed young people to experience and perform contemporary popular music, trying their hand at all associated instruments, including drums, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitars, keyboards and vocals. Also song writing skills and approaches were introduced, resulting in a composition by the participants.
Both established and first time players got involved, with the session focusing towards the performance of the rehearsed songs. Due to the individuals involved having little opportunity within their area for engaging with other musicians and creating bands, this was an excellent chance for them to experience the 'ins and outs' of instrument playing and band cohesion.
